Jared Gold

Jared Gold's recent emergence as one of New York's most in demand organists comes from years of dedication and respect to the Hammond B-3. With such influences as Larry Young, Jack McDuff, and Don Patterson, a unique philosophy based on extending harmony and solidifying groove has taken precedence. Versatility has provided Jared the opportunity to work with such established veterans as Dave Stryker, John Abercrombie, Ed Cherry, Jon Gordon, Oliver Lake, Bill Goodwin, Adam Nussbaum, Jimmy Ponder, Ralph Bowen, Bruce Williams, Cecil Brooks III, Don Braden, Ralph Peterson, William Ash, John Swana, and Tony Reedus. In 2004 Dave Stryker included Jared in his newly formed organ trio with drummer Tony Reedus. With a mixture of adventurous original music and new takes on some old standards this group has been performing often, including a live WBGO broadcast from J and R music in NYC. Jared's writing and arranging skills are featured in his collaboration with guitarist Randy Napoleon and drummer Quincy Davis. They have produced two CD's of which "Enjoy the Moment" (pko records) has received high acclaim and radio play throughout the country. Jared's discography also includes "The Chaser" with the Dave Stryker Trio, "Going Somewhere" with the Avi Rothbard Trio, "Broadway Alley" with the William Ash Trio, and "Springloaded" with the Dan Pratt Organ Quartet.

The Dave Stryker Trio with Bob Mintzer: Groove Street

Read "Groove Street" reviewed by Pierre Giroux

The Dave Stryker Trio with tenor saxophonist Bob Mintzer is a captivating musical escapade. This collaboration not only showcases the talents of the two principals but also the two accompanying players, organist Jared Gold and drummer McClenty Hunter. Right from the initial notes of the opening track “Groove Street," a Dave Stryker original, the band sets itself up for success with Gold's classic organ shuffle as the launching pad. Stryker's guitar sizzles and Mintzer weaves a ...

The Dave Stryker Trio: Groove Street

Read "Groove Street" reviewed by Jack Bowers

Guitarist Dave Stryker's latest album, Groove Street, is in fact “The Dave Stryker Trio with Bob Mintzer," a combination that is a sure bet to enhance its merit and heighten its import--a sentiment that is equally true when applied to any album on which the acclaimed tenor saxophonist sits in. Stryker and Mintzer are longtime friends who somehow never recorded together, although Mintzer furnished the arrangements for Blue Soul, Stryker's splendid album with Germany's WDR Big Band. ...

Dave Stryker: Prime

Read "Prime" reviewed by Jack Bowers

Guitarist Dave Stryker, a ubiquitous presence on the New York scene (and elsewhere) for more than three decades as a leader or sideman, is also a prolific recording artist with more than 35 albums under his belt (and many more than that as member of various ensembles) in formats ranging from big band to trio. On Prime, he opts for the smaller arrangement, employing his long-time working group (Jared Gold, organ; McClenty Hunter, drums) to perform eight of Stryker's engaging ...

Rale Micic: Only Love Will Stay

Read "Only Love Will Stay" reviewed by Jack Bowers

Only Love Will Stay, a tasteful and even-keeled trio date, embodies seven of Serbian-born guitarist and leader Rale Micic's original compositions and a lone standard, Irving Berlin's venerable “How Deep Is the Ocean." Micic is ably supported by organist Jared Gold and either Johnathan Blake (five tracks) or Geoff Clapp (three) on drums. Micic's themes are respectable but, if you want to hear the trio at its best, go straight to Berlin (Irving, that is). Micic is even brighter and ...

Dave Stryker: Baker's Circle

Read "Baker's Circle" reviewed by Jack Bowers

On Baker's Circle, guitarist Dave Stryker revisits a format in which he is quite comfortable: an organ-driven rhythm ensemble whose emphasis is on hard-nosed contemporary swing. There is, however, a refreshing exclamation mark this time around in the person of able-bodied tenor saxophonist Walter Smith III, and one more fringe benefit (on three tracks): percussionist Mayra Casales, who adds even more energy to an already vigorous session. Jared Gold is the soulful organist, with versatile drummer McClenty ...

Various Artists: Tales Of Wonder: A Jazz Celebration Of Stevie

Read "Tales Of Wonder: A Jazz Celebration Of Stevie" reviewed by Kyle Simpler

There aren't many songwriters who have reached a level of success comparable to Stevie Wonder. He is one of the most important figures in American music, and to celebrate his 70th birthday, Posi-Tone records is releasing Tales of Wonder: A Jazz Celebration of Stevie. This compilation, performed by some of the label's excellent roster of musicians, offers a fitting tribute to this legendary artist. Rather than simply offering something of a greatest hits compilation, Tales of Wonder digs into Wonder's ...

Jared Gold: Reemergence

Read "Reemergence" reviewed by C. Andrew Hovan

The title of organist Jared Gold's newest release seems to suggest that he is returning to the fold after being away for a time. In actuality, he has been a mainstay on the New York scene for some time now and can boast eight previous albums as a leader dating back to 2008's Solids and Stripes. More likely is that the title alludes to the fact that Gold's discography appears exclusively on the Posi-Tone label, an imprimatur known ...

Guitarist Dave Stryker to release 'Prime' with Jared Gold and McClenty Hunter on Strikezone Records

Guitarist Dave Stryker to release 'Prime' with Jared Gold and McClenty Hunter on Strikezone Records

Source: Jim Eigo, Jazz Promo Services

Fresh off their summer tour opening for Steely Dan, guitarist Dave Stryker releases Prime—the first recording featuring his working trio. Along with Jared Gold on organ and McClenty Hunter on drums, Stryker offers eight new compositions and the beautiful standard “I Should Care.” From the burning title track “Prime” to songs penned for his first boss Jack McDuff (“Captain Jack” and “Dude’s Lounge”) as well as “Mac” for his drummer and the original trio versions of “Hope” and “As We ...

Jared Gold - All Wrapped up (Posi-Tone, 2011)

Source: Music and More by Tim Niland

Organist Jared Gold builds a fine mainstream outing of hard-bop, blues and ballads on this album in conjunction with Ralph Bowen on tenor saxophone, Jim Rotondi on trumpet and flugelhorn and Quincy Davis on drums.

They open the the record fast with a couple of fine cookers, “My Sentiments Exactly" and “Get Out of My Sandbox," both of which feature fast grooving organ solos and deft bass pedal work, along with fleet work from the horns and drums. The full ...

Jared Gold - All Wrapped up (2011)

Source: Something Else!

As I type this review, I'm listening to not necessarily All Wrapped Up, the new record by organist Jared Gold, but also Unity by Larry Young. I know, it doesn't make sense, since it's Gold's record being reviewed here, not Young's. But something struck me about All Wrapped Up when I listened to it the last time: Gold's artistic development is going along the same track as Young’s did. Whereas Young started out as a Jimmy Smith wannabe and blossomed ...

Jared Gold - Out of Line (2010)

Source: Something Else!

By Pico Maybe it's just me, but I think we're in the midst of a full-fledged revival in jazz organ, led by a newer generation of players who have gone beyond mimicking the tried and true voicings of Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff and Richard “Groove" Holmes. In that group of innovative new B-3 specialists I'd include Larry Goldings, Sam Yahel, John Medeski, Neal Evans and Gary Versace. Recently, I've come across another fresh face who I believe in merely two ...

"The presence of organist Jared Gold ramps up the energy considerably. His sound competes with each other instrument for space, forcing that macho bebop favored by trombonist Curtis Fuller, drummer Elvin Jones and trumpeter Lee Morgan."
