KEVIN BLANCQ Trumpeter/Educator
A native of New Orleans, Kevin Blancq was born in 1964 and began musical studies with piano at age 9, trumpet at 10, and drums at 13. At the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA), Kevin studied both jazz (w/Ellis Marsalis) and classical styles while performing in a variety of musical settings from brass quintets to symphony orchestras, jazz trios to big bands. Upon graduating high school, the only son of Betty and Charlie, both musician/teachers, Kevin found himself with a full scholarship to attend the prestigious Tanglewood Summer Musical Institute in Lenox, MA and the opportunity to study privately with trumpet legend Roger Voisin. After spending that summer in the presence of Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, and Gunther Schuller, Kevin accepted a scholarship to attend the University of North Texas where he performed in a multitude of classical and jazz ensembles, trained as a recording engineer, and became the unofficial jazz historian of the Class of 1987. Moving to New York in the summer of that year, Kevin began to take every opportunity possible to further his ability as a trumpeter, educator, and jazz connoisseur. During the next twenty plus years in New York, Mr. Blancq has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Jimmy Heath, Slide Hampton, Jim McNeely, Bob Dorough, Eddie Bert, Andy Bey, Sahib Shihab, Doc Cheatham, Frank Foster, and Vince Giordano among others. He has led a variety of groups in the New York area with appearances at Birdland, Iridium, and the JVC Jazz Festival. While on graduate scholarship at the Manhattan School of Music, Kevin continued his studies with Justin DiCioccio, Chris Gekker, Cecil Bridgewater, Manny Album, and Chris Rosenberg. Mr. Blancq is currently directing the jazz bands at LaGuardia High School of Music & Art. His CD, the Kevin Blancq Trio, is currently available at http://www.louisianamusicfactory.com/showoneprod.asp?ProductID=4521
