Nicolas Letman-Burtinovic

Nicolas Letman-Burtinovic is a New York-based acoustic bass player and composer who skillfully brings his background in the fine and performance arts to his projects. He is one of the primary forces behind BombX, Haleoscene, the 4 Runners and the Vienna Suite. When seeing those bands perform, the audience is treated to a life-changing experience. As one of the most creative and talented musician/composers in the new music scene, he has challenged both musicians and listeners to face the music within themselves and the world around them. He has inspired his colleagues to chart new territory within their own playing and writing while exposing the audiences to some of the most talented and exciting performers from all over the world.

Nicolas has played and/or recorded with numerous people including: Archie Shepp, Odean Pope, Bill Roye, Avery Sharpe, Mark Helias, Steve Pott, Michael Attias, Loren Stillman, Peter Van Huffel, Colmore Duncan, David Bryant, Jacob Sacks, Gerald Cleaver, Nicholas Sager, Danny Fisher, Take Toriyama, Ziv Ravitz, Kris Davis, Jeff Davis, Georg Vogel, Gunter Gruner, Daniel Carter, Salim Washington. In 2004 he recorded with drummer Matt Wilson on NBJ’s CD.

Like a piece of visual art, Nicolas' compositions contain tonal color, variety (of sound), texture and form. Each tune is also story that contains a beginning, middle and end. During live sets, the songs' order is chosen for auditory continuity. There are almost no breaks between songs so that transitions from one tune to the next maintain or change the story's mood.

Read "The Invisible Landscape" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

An ardent student of no less a legend than Andrew Cyrille, drummer/composer Gunter Gruner's fondness for jumpy, adroit, noir landscapes comes with a decisively Pink Panther stroll: lanky, animated, wise-ass but humble. His side-street detours to survey The Invisible Landscape involve more than the usual walk down free-form lanes. With downtown, free-jazz giant Daniel Carter on sax reaching back to go further forward, Gruner's arrhythmic compositions involve the usual micro tonalities, fractured harmonics and head space, but never ...
