His new album “Calendario do Som -9 Dias” (2009) was recorded and distributed in Europe by the Portuguese Label Numérica (www.numericamultimedia. pt) and had the collaboration of one of the most important names in the European Jazz scenario, the Norwegian bass player Arild Andersen (ECM), not to mention names such as Alexandre Frazão (drums) and Guto Lucena (flute and sax).
In this work, Araújo tries out 9 pieces from Hermeto Pascoal’s Calendario do Som by giving them an introspective sonority, inventive and interactive on the side of the band musicians improvisations, suggesting an alternative panorama for the reading of Pascoal’s music. The album received an extra touch of art with its cover” a photograph done by Nana Souza Dias who is considered to be one of the most important photographers in the present days by B & W Magazine.
The first álbum O Aleph have 11 original compositions, the album presents Brazilian contemporary music tendencies, skillfully mixing popular and erudite music and often sounding like a Brazilian popular chamber orchestra. Araujo and his sextet open new possibilities for typical popular instruments like mandolin, acoustic guitar, accordion and flute. Accompanied by Mario Seve(woodwinds), Fausto Borem(contrabass), Edu Szajnbrum(Drums and percussion) and Wanderson Lopez(Acoustic guitar, mandolin, acoustic bass), the pianist explores new musical forms, in a rich range of tempos and sonorities.
Professor of the Art Centre at Federal University of Espirito Santo, Fabiano teachs the chairs of Harmony, Piano and Arrange. He is envolved with researches that mixes Schoenberg`s music theory with freely and intuitive proccess of musical creation of Brazilian popular music publishing articles in academic magazines and journals. Fabiano Araujo is an interesting Brazilian pianist that deserves attention. In 2007 he released the album “O Aleph”, based on the homonymous short story by Jorge Luis Borges, this time the inspiration comes from his compatriot Hermeto Pascoal. Accompanied by Guto Lucena (winds), Arild Andersen (bass), and “our” Alexandre Frazao (drums), Araújo makes some jazz reviews on tunes from the “Calendario do Som” by Hermeto. Pascoal’s megalomaniac project is a book with 366 compositions, one for each day of the year, all written between June 23rd/1996 and June 22nd/1997. The pianist took a more modest way: Picked only 9 days- or 9 themes” and worked them into a jazz format, making the adjustments for a quartet to play with space for improvisations. Not less than expected, it is the pianist who stands out, with a fluid discourse intelligently controlling the body of each theme. The Sax player Guto Lucena is at good ground. The Norwegian Bass player Arild Andersen- a well-known name among the ECM fans (partner of Jan Garbarek, Bobo Stenson, Ralph Towner, etc.) - has nice moments of dialoguing with the piano and shows a good connection with Alex frazao” who is impeccable, as usual. More than a good collective work”which this is- or the millionth proof of Pascoal’s creative genius, this album is a good sip of the abilities of the pianist Fabiano Araújo, who is ready for new flights.(JAZZ.PT MAGAZINE#28)
