Joonsam Lee

Born and raised in Seoul, Korea, Joonsam Lee started out on the electric bass guitar with listening Jaco Pastorious in his age nineteen, and switched to acoustic two years later with influence of Ray Brown, Paul Chambers, Christian Mcbride, Avishai Cohen. He privately studied classical bass with Yeong-Seok Seong(Seoul national symphony orchestra) and simultaneously played in Yeon Namgung(Jazz drummer) jazz band in T.V shows, radio station and concert hall.

In 2007, he moved to New York City to study in N.Y.U, where he had privilege of studying and performing with Joe Lovano, Brian Lynch, Ralph Alessi, Kenny Werner, John scofield, Wayne Krantz, Don Friedman, Lenny Pickett, Andy Gravish, and Jean-Michel Pilc to name a few. Upon graduating from N.Y.U. with Master’s Degree, he became busy performing and recording within the city’s fertile jazz and contemporary music scene.

Joonsam currently lives in New York and in his so far short time living in town, he plays with some of the finest musicians in NYC. Appearance includes some of major venues in NYC and festivals around the world such as Blue Note Jazz Club(NYC), Jazz at Lincoln Center(NYC), Smalls(NYC), Fat Cat(NYC), Kitano(NYC), Jazz Gallery(NYC), Cleopatra’s Needle(NYC), Grand Tour Jazz Festival(Italy), Jazz Di Marca Festival(Italy), Jarasum International Jazz Festival(Korea), etc.

He has led his own group “Joonsam Lee quintet” and as a sideman he is performing with a wide array of material and musicians, having toured and played jazz music, broadway musical and Symphony Orchestra(NYKSO).
