Canadian Guitarist, Composer and Educator Jake Hanlon has, in a short span of time established himself as one of the brightest up-and-coming talents in Canadian Jazz.
Hanlon's music has been quoted as ...Beautiful writing and playing....LOOKOUT.....wonderful by Jazz Guitar Maestro Vic Juris. NEA Jazz Master Curtis Fuller called Hanlon a “Smooth Rider.” Composer and Jazz Guitar Legend John Abercrombie stated “... Jake's tunes are a whole other thing” and Grammy nominated Composer/Arranger Phil Kelly noted Hanlon's writing as “fresh and exciting.”
Hanlon is also a recording artist having released his debut Album “Follow” on Armored Records in the Fall of 2010 which features 8 original Jazz compositions as well as plans in the pipeline for a Jazz Trio album and another recording with his Brother, Jazz Pianist Josh Hanlon sometime in the near future.
Hanlon has performed with a list of award winning, internationally renowned or Grammy/Juno nominated Artists such as Tim Hagans, Vic Juris, Mike Murley, Kelly Jefferson, Dianne Nilani, Yoon Sun Choi, Paul Tynan, Tom Easley, Mark Adam and many more. Hanlon performs as often as he can with the STFX Faculty in the Guest artist program or weekly Faculty performances in Antigonish NS.
Hanlon is a graduate of Saint Francis Xavier University (B.Mus w/Honors class of 2003) and the University of North Texas (M.M Jazz Studies class of 2008) where he was Graduate Teaching Fellow for Jazz Guitar. In 2007 Hanlon was selected to participate in the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Residency. Since September of 2008 Hanlon has been a member of the Faculty of Music at Saint Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, Canada. Here he maintains a full Jazz Guitar studio, teaches or has taught a variety of Jazz Theory and Arranging courses and coaches small group ensembles. This coming Academic Year Hanlon will be teaching Music Technology, Jazz Theory, Ensembles in addition to his regular Studio duties.
