BIOGRAPHY

Matt Lawson is from the tiny but beautiful Mount Desert Island off the coast of Maine. He is the son of a lobster fisherman, and grew up far away from the world of jazz and its urban sensibility. Matt gained success early in his musical life when he was chosen as Outstanding Soloist in 1993 at the Maine State Jazz Festival. After high school Matt joined the United States Navy Band and traveled most of the globe performing in jazz, rock, and ceremonial ensembles. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy he took the job as lead singer and trumpeter with the Portland based blues band Red Light Revue, which was named outstanding blues act by the Portland Phoenix magazine in 1999. In 2000 Matt moved to Louisville Kentucky to further his education, and in 2003 he won the National Trumpet Competitions Jazz Division. In 2004, he released his debut CD entitled Midnight in Merizo on the Jazz Factory Label. He has shared the stage with such artists as Phil Woods, James Moody, Curtis Fuller, Marcus Printup, Jimmy Heath, Lew Soloff, Bobby Watson, Kenny Werner, Harry Pickens, Clark Terry, the Temptations, and the Bob and Tom Band.
