Anje West

Anje is a singer with over 20 years experience, many of which she's spent as one of Australia's finest interpreters of Brazilian music.

Her work with The View From Madeleine's Couch (co-founded in 1998 with vibist husband, Kym Ambrose), has seen the production of 2 EP's and 2 albums. The latest, Casa da Boa Vida, was the feature album on ABC Radio National's program The Daily Planet, and she has won the Queensland Music Award for Best World Music Song in 2009.

She is an accomplished percussionist, one of only a handful of women in Australia who are proficient on different traditional Brazilian instruments like the pandeiro & surdo, and is well known for her ability to phrase like Joao while holding down a steady shaker AND a clave. It's freaky!

Her passion for Brazilian music has taken her twice to Brazil to study and live, and she'll return with Kym in late 2012 to again attend masterclasses, record, and has been invited to play shows with the great Brazilian artists Marcio Bahia (drums..Hermeto Pascoal, Hamilton de Holanda), Dino Rangel (guitar) Mazinho Venturo (bass, Marcos Valle), and Beto Lopes (bass, guitar, MIlton Nascimento).

Anje also performs regularly with two other singers, taking a'capella folk & world music concerts in to primary schools around Australia for Musica Viva in Schools. Over the past ten years she's toured almost every state in the country, and performed at over 600 schools to 60,000 children, from capital cities to country towns and Indigenous communities.

Aside from her recordings with Madcouch, she's appeared on another dozen albums as a backing vocalist, or as guest or featured artist on compilation albums.

”In my opinion, this “sound” of The View, has in greater part to do with the beautifully woven vocals of Anje West. Her voice never distracts you from the melodies or the rhythms, but guides you through, highlighting the inherent joy of Brazilian grooves” ( Review of Casa da Boa Vida by Sharon Thompson, FM 99.3 Thompson's Corner)

“The album's hallmarks are its delicate and uncluttered song arrangements, West's sweetly plangent voice (singing mostly in fluid Portuguese)” (Review of Tranquilo by Jane Costessi)

2002 The View From Madeleine's Couch (E.P) 2005 Tranquilo (album) 2007 Sabor (E.P.) 2009 Casa da Boa Vida (album)
