Aros: Train Song

Read "Train Song" reviewed by AAJ Staff

It might be highly civilized, but Train Song is so unassuming that it never crosses the line into pretense. That's important with music this serious, and it's not to be taken for granted. Aros is an Amsterdam-based sextet co-led by Canadian tenor player Rob Armus and Austrian pianist Marion von Tilzer, and this is the group's second release after a self-titled debut on BVHaast in 2001. Train Song capitalizes on the talents of the group, which include an urbane sophistication ...

Backgrounder: Dodo Marmarosa — Dodo's Back!

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Yesterday, I posted about pianist Craig Davis's new trio tribute to Dodo Marmarosa. I also promised you a fabulous Backgrounder album this week by Marmarosa. Well, why not today, since you probably still have Dodo on your in mind. Dodo's Back! is one of my favorites. It's elegant and pushy, with touches of George Shearing in places. Recorded in Chicago in May 1961, the album was released in 1962. Marmarosa was backed by Richard Evans on bass and Marshall Thompson ...

Craig Davis: Music of Dodo Marmarosa

Michael “Dodo" Marmarosa was a fascinating jazz pianist. Among the first pianists to master bebop in the mid-1940s, he had an accomplished, plush touch. As I wrote back in 2008, “Dodo was less aggressive than Bud Powell and more expressive and complex than Al Haig. He preferred a punctuating, full keyboard approach, developing ideas in the middle and widening out to express them." Marmarosa also was much in demand early on. He was skilled enough to play piano for many ...

Interview: Hank O'Neal on Chiaroscuro Records

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

I've known Hank O'Neal since the start of JazzWax in 2007. An information hound since his days with the CIA, he somehow found out about me and JazzWax early on and was always there to help me track down legends to interview. In fact, I think George Wein hipped Hank to JazzWax and me to Hank, now that I recall. Hank, a prolific author and wonderful photographer, has always been a generous jazz angel. He's been there for many people ...

One Track Mind: Sarah Jarosz, "The Tourist" (2011)

By Tom Johnson Do we need another Radiohead cover? Hasn't everything been said about Radiohead by artists from every corner of the music world? From Christopher O'Riley's albums of sleepy piano solos to premiere jazz pianist Brad Mehldau's definitive readings and the Bad Plus' rave-up of “Karma Police," or even Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid's wild antics shown on “National Anthem," it kind of seems like maybe we've gotten enough new blood injected into Radiohead to see how important and ...
