Marlene and Billy Ver Planck: Speaking of Love

Read "Speaking of Love" reviewed by Dave Nathan

Since 1955, Marlene Ver Planck has been turning out impeccably crafted albums built on gems culled from the mines of those endearing songs from the American pop culture as well as some off beat pieces, but gems also. This latest endeavor is one of the outputs from Ver Planck's annual trek to London where she works with the Roy Babbington Trio. Ute Lemper Channels Dietrich On 'Rendezvous With Marlene'

It takes a kind of fearlessness to address the mythical talent of superstar Marlene Dietrich. Dietrich’s stardom is legendary; her story a picaresque of adventure, fantasy, imagination, and coveted reality. Yet, if anyone can begin to touch Dietrich’s transcendent nature, to tell her story, it would have to be jny: Berlin-born, New York-based Ute Lemper.  Lemper, a multi-talented musical theater and cabaret star, has lit up stages—acting, singing, dancing, writing, even painting—since the early ’80s. She began with Chekhov and ...

Vocalist Marlene VerPlanck came up in the business in the late '50s when pop and jazz lived together. She began singing in 1952 and recorded her first album for Savoy in '55 with pianist Hank Jones, bassist Eddie Jones and drummer Kenny Clarke. A year later came a tour with Charlie Spivak's Orchestra, where she met her future husband, arranger Billy VerPlanck. By the early '60s, as Teen Pan Alley and pop-rock pulled the rug out from under traditional pop ...

Singer Marelen VerPlanck has a new album—Ballads, Mostly. It's a delicious collection of moody songs with an upbeat feel. Seven of the 15 track were arranged by Marlene's late husband, Billy VerPlanck, who died in 2009. Though Marlene spent three decades starting in the '60s recording demos and jingles, she began her professional career in the bands of Charlie Spivak and Tommy Dorsey, and recorded many terrific jazz albums over the years.
