free improviser guitarist. born 1970 in Helsinki, Finland
“Alvari Lume’s music is an emotional stream in constant evolution,” says Italian composer, Emiliano Pietrini , who records under the name, Globoscuro, “Alvari’s radical improvisation is like an illumination. Images and sensations evolving according to the rhythm that explodes from the heart of the performer. A perpetual motion of inspiration. What you hear is a kind of struggle: The thoughts expressed by each instrument fighting among themselves. But it is a harmonic struggle harmonic. A quiet chaos…a shiny madness.”
Alvari Lume performs live with different musicians if not performing solo. 'ever since guitar was developed', he says, 'there has been a strong heritage of playing solo especially guitarist composers with their own music. my music is free improvised and i feel that this heritage is important to keep alive with ones own musical language'. .

“I hear colors,” says free improviser guitarist and composer, Jaakko Savolainen. “White is a tense sound. Like waiting for something. Black is very slow and the lowest sound. Red has everything inside of it. Think of all possible feelings with their widest possible meanings! Passion!”
No surprise that this Finnish musician who records under the name, Alvari Lune, is also a painter. But Savolainen says that while he typically painted with vibrant colors when he was young, eventually the intense hues became too much for him. “I started to feel them too strongly. I began feeling sick when painting. So nowadays I mostly paint with black and white. I can use red sometimes too. But when I was young, I painted big yellow paintings.”

Can the rest of us learn to “see” music as Savolainen does? “I think it’s quite about jumping into the unknown with all emotions. Closing eyes and feeling with your heart more than ears can hear.”
Although classically trained in guitar and exposed while very young to composers like J.S.Bach and Krystoff Penderecki, Savolainen says he never liked to play “someone else’s music or to repeat music that is already done.”
For Jaakko it was all about the spontaneity of “wild free jazz recordings” such as the likes of John Coltrane and Cecil Taylor. “I think it’s more about giving a chance to the unexpected without resisting where music is going to take you. Allowing yourself to follow the notes into the journey of unknown. Feeling with your whole being without any limits.”
“Jaakko’s music is an emotional stream in constant evolution,” says Italian composer, Emiliano Pietrini , who records under the name, Globoscuro, “Jaakko’s radical improvisation is like an illumination. Images and sensations evolving according to the rhythm that explodes from the heart of the performer. A perpetual motion of inspiration. http://combustus.wordpress.com/ weeblylink_new_windowAs the Audio Gourmet netlabel catalog expands with the weeks and months that pass, I am delighted to push the label in a new direction with the inclusion of this stunning EP from Finnish guitarist Alvari Lume.
He also is responsible for running a successful experimental music club called TMK.
'Ennen' is part one of two EP releases for Audio Gourmet and showcases a selection of three experimental guitar pieces I selected from the artist's Reverb Nation account. All of these tracks are past productions and span the last few years of Alvari Lume's recordings. 'Ennen' means 'then' in Finnish and is an apt title given that the recordings are all selected previous works from his catalog. Fortcoming for the future will be the 'Nyt' EP, meaning 'now' in Finnish; this will feature a selection of pieces that Alvari Lume is working on specifically for the Audio Gourmet netlabel, to show where his music is at currently.
Within the three experimental tracks on 'Ennen', your ears are in for a treat. This is crafted entirely from the recorded sound of his live and improvised guitar and the fact that there is no additional electronic manipulation is a testament to his outstanding talent as a performer.
Here is Alvari Lume's Myspace page so that you may stay informed of this talented artist's plans for the future: www.myspace.com/alvarilume
Stay tuned for more information of EP two from Alvari Lume, 'Nyt'...
alvari lume - ALVARI LUME: It is quite a treat for these old ears to behold some of the sonic wonders (totally) available for your aural pleasure these days - just listen to one of my favorite pieces from Alvari, liquid violet... beautiful languid guitar over a wash background that will put you in the outer zone in a matter of only a few notes. Yet on about midnight, I'm reminded of some of the antics my friend Ernesto Diaz-Infante pulled off with me back in the late '90's, especially the acoustic guitar stretches. If you love well-played and highly talented guitar with strong improvised roots, you'll have to have this gent's music, especially those like (my favorite out of these 35 or so songs) sign of C... some excellent tonal contrasts. This isn't music for the uninitiated, though... if your ears are only looking for 4- 4 timing, with no adventure, this probably won't be your cup of tea... my ears are so attuned to what Alvari is doing that I feel like sitting right down at my keyboard (whoops, it hasn't arrived in Korea yet) to improvise my own opus. I give him a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an EQ (energy quotient) rating of 4.96.
