Nils: Ready to Play

Read "Ready to Play" reviewed by Jeff Winbush

The two predominant instruments in the smooth jazz genre are alto saxophones and electric guitars. There's a lot of competition out there and if you're going to stand out from the crowd, you had better have something to say and say it in a way that while familiar, is still original.By that yardstick Nils (just Nils) should enjoy a long and productive career. A former session musician for George Benson and The Temptations, Nils credits the prolific studio ...

All About Jazz is celebrating Nils Petter Molvaer's birthday today!

Nils Petter Molvær (NPM), Norwegian trumpet player, composer and producer, connects multiple music styles—jazz, ambient, house, electronic and break beats, as well as elements from hip hop, rock and pop music—and effortlessly melts them into convincing soundscapes of deep intensity. Denmark's SteepleChase Records remains one of the great jazz labels. Founded by Nils Winther in 1972, SteepleChase early on recorded many American jazz giants who began to tour regularly in Europe or had moved there for steady work. That's because by the 1970s, most American labels had all but given ...

Nils Lindberg, one of Sweden's finest jazz pianists and orchestral composer-arrangers who collaborated in Stockholm with American jazz musicians including Benny Bailey, Idrees Sulieman and Red Mitchell, died on February 20. He was 88. Among his albums that Americans jazz fans need to hear are Sax Appeal (1960) and Trisection (1962). Most recently, I posted in January about Nils and his beautiful album with Swedish singer Margareta Bengtson. Nils had an ability to weave together Swedish folk songs, a jazz ...

Back in November, I posted about the Real Group, a hugely popular a cappella vocal ensemble from Sweden. Well, the other day, I stumbled across a 2008 album by the group's former soprano, Margareta Bengtson. The album is As We Are (Prophone) led by Swedish pianist and arranger Nils Lindberg. Several years ago, I interviewed Nils. Margareta is an astonishing singer with tremendous tone and power. Recorded in Sweden, As We Are features Bengtson backed by a terrific band: Nils ...
