James Harrar is a filmmaker that began his musical career creating soundtrack to his experimental films.
Since 1995 James has been collaborating with Marshall Allen, of The Sun Ra Arkestra, creating live music to Harrar’s silent films. Marshall Allen explores sound in much the same manner that Harrar attempts to explore the moving image.
As a musician, Harrar plays several instruments: Alto sax, Bamboo Alto Sax, Tenor sax, Flute, Suling, Clarinet, Husuli, Koto and Kora.
In addition to continued collaboration with Marshall Allen, Harrar has performed with many talented musicians and groups within Cinema Soloriens and outside: Eric Thielemans, Arthur Doyle & His Free Soul Orchestra & his Elecctro-Acoustic Ensemble, Ed Wilcox, Temple of Bon Matin, Michael Gibbons (Bardo Pond), Giovanni Barcella, Nat Birchall, Charles Cohen, Yahya Abdul-Majid (Sun Ra Arkestra) and Art Jenkins (Sun Ra Arkestra).

Cinema Soloriens music is passionate, haunting, eerie, complex,
liberating…a curious soundworld recalling The Magic City and
Strange Strings, inhabited by slowly-evolving compositions and
deconstructed space chants to celebrate Ra’s legacy.
