Brainkiller

Brainkiller has captivated audiences across the USA, Canada and Mexico with "hypnotic landscapes that gallivant through freewheeling jazz, avant-classical and art-rock territories" (Phoenix New Times) since their inception in 2000. The trio of Brian Allen, Jacob Koller and Hernan Hecht create a powerful and astonishingly unique style, owing as much to Coltrane and Monk as Led Zeppelin, Xenakis, Cobain and Piazzola. Their anticipated studio release captures their wildly imaginative and diverse ideas with a focused energy, creating other layers of abstract visual imagery in the process, as Pitchfork describes: "Despite all manner of diversions and mood changes, the direction never seems to change. And when they're over, I feel like I've just been told a short story." Forming a direct connection with their listeners and thriving from this interaction, Brainkiller is constantly touring, with upcoming performances in the USA, Mexico, and new journeys planned for South America and Japan.

Brainkiller: Colourless Green Superheroes

Read "Colourless Green Superheroes" reviewed by Vincenzo Roggero

Brainkiller: Colourless Green Superheroes

Read "Colourless Green Superheroes" reviewed by C. Michael Bailey

RareNoise Records has made a cottage industry of attracting talent that not only doesn't color within the lines, but erases the lines altogether. Brainkiller is no exception to this approach. Comprised of the unlikely assembly of keyboards (Jacob Koller), trombone (Brian Allen), and drums (Hernan Hecht), Brainkiller floats down the same river navigated recently by Berserk! and Slobber Pup to a musical place that can only be described as a crime scene, but in a good way. ...

Brainkiller: The Infiltration

Read "The Infiltration" reviewed by Mark F. Turner

With a name like Brainkiller, it's easy to imagine a punk band thrashing the noise to a frenzied crowd of head-bangers. While the idea is not entirely a stretch in terms of The Infiltration's energy, there are clear differences: first, instead of the usual guitar or piano-led ensemble, there's an uncommon trio of trombone, keys, and drums; second, these seasoned musicians can deliver diversity, from avant-gardism and electronic exploitation to workings that are imaginative and progressive. Brass ...

Brainkiller Pushes The Envelope On Genre-defying Second Album Colourless Green Superheroes

Source: Antje Hübner

On the creative instrumental music scene today there are a plethora of fresh-sounding new bands that artfully blend jazz, classical, rock, electronica and the avant-garde. Add to that list the renegade trio Brainkiller, which has been flying under the radar with a potent sound that is steeped in structure while pushing the envelope on audaciousness. With Colourless Green Superheroes, the band that continues to defy easy categorization is back with more epic compositions bursting with energy and compelling grooves, intricate ...

Brainkiller - The Infiltration (2011)

Remember last month when I said I have more examples of weird-assed trios coming up? Here's another one. Inspired by the long running Ray Anderson-led BassDrumBone trio, Brainkiller has Brian Allen manning the trombone and Hernan Hecht on drums, but substitutes the bass for keyboards and effects by Jacob Koller. Despite sporting a name that would be perfect for a death metal band (and a CD cover to match), Brainkiller is rooted in jazz, but also uses jazz as a ...
