Mike Hall is an Educator/Jazz Saxophonist and Coordinator of Jazz Studies and academic tutor (Jazz Studies) at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester. For about 10 years at the RNCM he is tutor in Jazz Studies, jazz saxophone, teaches improvisation, theory, history and directs the RNCM Big Band and Jazz Collective. He is also a composer and consultant for The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, director of the Canford Jazz Summer School and runs a variety of other jazz improvisation courses at various locations around the UK and France. He has been an active musician for 35 years. After playing the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with the Edinburgh Schools Symphony Orchestra he moved to the saxophone with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and to make frequent national broadcasts with composer/pianist Michael Garrick with whom he toured Malaysia in 1995.

More recently Mike played a week at Ronnie Scott's Club with the Echoes of Ellington Orchestra, a gala concert at the World Saxophone Congress in Slovenia and subsequent UK tour with Andy Scott's Sax Assault and a series of dates with his own jazz quartet. He regularly freelances with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Halle Orchestras with guest conductors such as John Wilson. Mike was recently involved in a project involving the RLPO and the Wayne Shorter Quartet. Other projects have included his own jazz chamber group Crystal and music for jazz quartet and string orchestra. Mike has just recorded a CD (‘Over the Moon’, released 2009) with his duo partner, pianist Dan Whieldon. Recently he has also seen his three movement composition for saxophone quartet, ‘Tales of the Sun God’ go into print. (Astute Music).
