Primary Instrument: Guitar
Steve Calafati grew up in New Jersey and has played the guitar for 35 years. He studied Classical, Jazz, theory, and counterpoint at Monmouth University and the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, as well as with numerous private instructors.
After college, his skills as a composer, engineer and producer rapidly developed as he worked on various rock and roll projects in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. After that, Steve performed for a few years as a Classical soloist and also with his own Jazz group.
Then, in 1997, Steve was drawn back to a past love - the music of Spain - Flamenco. He began his serious study of the centuries-old art form with master guitarist Enrique Vargas in New York and Madrid. All the while continuing to sharpen his composition skills, drawing from his now vast musical background. He has recently been developing a hybrid Jazz and Flamenco style of music, which is apparent on his current album, Mediterra.
