Sweden's Caprice Records Reissues Don Cherry's "Organic Music Society" - CD And Vinyl Versions

Source: Michael Bloom Media Relations

One of the towering figures of American music, Don Cherry was part of the revolutionary free-bop quartet led by Ornette Coleman in the late 1950s and early 1960s, an ensemble that helped shift the conversation about jazz from chord changes and swing to freedom and energy. Always an independent spirit, Cherry brought his openness and burgeoning knowledge of traditional musics from around the world to bear on Coleman’s project, lending an infectious, absolutely original air to the bold new music. ...

One Track Mind: Wadada Leo Smith's Organic - "Don Cherry's Electric Sonic Garden" (2011)

Source: Something Else!

The music of Wadada Leo Smith, no matter the setting, is spiritual, mesmerizing, purposeful and often dense. We found out back toward the end of '09 just how dense his music can be when this innovative trumpet player debuted his Organic ensemble on disc 2 of the Spiritual Dimensions. That group sported four ... four! ... electric guitarists, as well as two bassists, a cello and drums. That group performed just four tracks, live at New Haven, CT's Firehouse 12 ...

Daniel Levin, New Jazz Cellist, and His Adventurous Chamber Outing "Organic Modernism"

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards

Organic Modernism (Clean Feed 212). I think I get it. It's a modernism that flows naturally out of the non-pretentious music-making of this chamber quartet, namely Daniel Levin, leader and cello, Nate Wooley, trumpet, Matt Moran on vibes, and Peter Bitenc on doublebass. This is music that may have a walking bass underneath it now and again, but the give and take is of an unforced avant sort. There are compositional elements but the main thrust is the improvisational space, ...

Cameron Carpenter brings his organist showmanship to L.A.'s First Congregational Church on Sunday

The player with a flair for dramatic performances and glitzy outfits gives a prelude to his Disney Hall debut next season. The pipe organ's massive physical dimensions and its potential for earthshaking sonorities make it an instrument like no other. But those who play its multiple keyboards, pump its many pedals and pull its multifarious stops are another matter. Popularly regarded as repressed or freakish (think Simon ...
