Kubikmaggi

The would be members of KUBIKMAGGI got acquainted in 2003. This happened at St Petersburg University of Humanities and Social Sciences where Max Roudenko (bass) and Vlad Avdeev (guitar) were to get a degree in sound production. Ksenia joined them in one of the auditoria to play piano and sing, thus showing the musical material to work on.

The first rehearsal took place a few days after this meeting in one of the apartments on Ligovsky Prospect.

From that moment the musicians were in permanent creative search and their continuous experiments with sound and style resulted in yet another member who joined the band early in 2005. Artem Kochurov was invited by Vlad to take responsibility of all sorts of pre-reordered samples.

KUBIKMAGGI played its debut gig on October 7th 2005 in St. Petersburg's club Moloko.

As early as April 2006 KUBIKMAGGI was in the set list of "SKIF-10", Sergey Kuryokhin International Festival, though most of the band's concerts took place in Moscow. In the following autumn Artem left the band, and a decision was made to look for a drummer. Ilya Varfolomeev replied to the ad posted in the Internet and turned intro a fully legitimate member of the band right after the first rehearsal. He remained one until mid 2007.

In September 2007 Ilya was substituted by Denis Akimov. In September 2008 KUBIKMAGGI triumphantly performs on the international "Koktebel Jazz Festival" prestigious scene. On October 16th the debut album "Ono ne trebuetsa" (could be translated as "It's Unnecessary" or "Not Required") was presented in St Petersburg.

Vlad left the band soon after, and for the next half a year KUBIKMAGGI was a trio. Following Vlad, Denis left the band in April 2009, and the next 6 months were spent in search of a new drummer. During that period Ksenia played solo concerts. Along with Max they were working on new songs and took part in the project "Silent Movie with Live Music" composing and performing for such movies as "The Three Million Trial" (1926), "The Doll With Millions" (1928) and "Wings" (1927).

The search for a suitable drummer lead to nothing, but late in 2009 Ilya unexpectedly decided to get back in the band and so Kubikmaggi was trio once again.

Kubikmaggi are a wonderfully skilled, yet shambolic ensemble from St Petersburg. If that brief and contradictory declaration were enough to send you around the world in search of any such "wonder," the most recent opportunity to catch them live in their home town would have been a few weeks ago. Here they announced themselves as "yet again accompanied by a drummer, piano, bass... and loads of other stuff, too. In rather banal terms, it's a gig to be played 'after a long absence.'"
