Simin Tander

German Afghan vocalist Simin Tander represents a new sound in the European jazz landscape: mysterious, narrative, tenderly beautiful yet also powerful, playful and impulsive. Simin moves her audience with a fascinating voice that knows every possible color, expression and embodies it with an alluring intensity. In the Netherlands, Simin Tander’s talent is no longer a secret. During the last years Simin has become one of the rising stars of the Dutch jazz scene with succesful performances at the North Sea jazz Festival, the Bimhuis, the prestigious Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the 2010 Young VIP tour and her collaboration with Dutch Jazz star Eric Vloeimans. Simin and her Quartet have additionally performed at several international major venues including The Women in Jazz festival (Germany), JazzAhead (Germany), Bohemia Jazz Festival (Czech Republic), Catania Jazz (Italy), Hong Kong Jazz Festival (China) and International Jazzfestival Madrid (Spain). Simin’s debut CD, 'Wagma' (Neuklang Records) received a great deal of attention from both the Dutch and International jazz press.

The title to Simin’s Debut CD “Wagma” translates from the Afghan Pashtoe (Simin’s fathers native language) and means “Morning Dew”. The CD presents Simin not only as an accomplished vocalist but also as a extremely creative song writer. Simin’s compositions blend Jazz with singer songwriter elements and a hint of oriental mysticism into her own unique style. Floating from sublime ballads to challenging rhythms, from boundless improvisations to embracing melodies all leading to a world of emotion and contrasts. Wagma sees Simin as a passionate story teller with her own unique musical language.”

Tander brings refreshing innovation to a modern jazz vocal panorama awash with repetition and weary imitation. Her voice is a thing of beauty, and this debut not only offers the promise of great things to come, but delivers from the get go.”
