Primary Instrument: Guitar
Jonathan “Chief” Smith has recently emerged from a 30-year career in the fire department and is now devoting his full energies to jazz. His new debut CD, (released August 2011) titled Jonathan Smith Quintet En Route, occupies the space between mainstream jazz, new adult contemporary, and smooth jazz.
Smith has moonlighted playing jazz for over ten years and is now taking the next step by presenting a mix of tunes from the likes of Ben Webster, Horace Silver and Blue Mitchell, as well his first as two original compositions, Emily’s Dance and Blues for Mandy.
Swedish reviewer Anders Jonasson has recently characterized Smith’s guitar work as “very nice playing...clean, crisp, a la Grant Green.”
