From Rio de Janeiro, 7-string guitarist Daniel Marques recently won the greatest award in his country, the 'Brazilian Grammy' known as the Prêmio da Música Brasileira (2010).

“The Brazilian Award was for my last project called Frevo Diabo Orchestra. I created that band, produced the awarded CD and directed the band, also composing and making arrangements. My new project is like a microcosm of the orchestra.”

Daniel is now releasing his debut solo album, Carnaval de Perneta (2011), independently on his own Pólvora label “pólvora” meaning “gunpowder.” This CD offers a different view of Brazilian Carnival and Folk music. Featuring all original material, the project showcases Daniel's compositions and arrangements, production and leadership. With a jazzy approach, including a variety of percussions, bass, a touch of trombone and occasional vocalizing, Marques creates a unique, exploding sound full of sparks.

The young guitarist has been gathering enthusiastic reviews performing internationally at guitar, jazz, world music and folk festivals. He continues to experiment with different formats ranging from Solo to Trio and beyond.

More: The professional Brazilian guitarist Daniel Marques was born (1979) and lives in Rio de Janeiro. He has developed his own rhythmic and energetic style. The abundant spectrum of rhythms in his music includes modern variations of traditional rhythms like samba, bossa- nova, choro, maracatu, frevo, baião... among others.

Daniel studied guitar at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and holds a Master's from the same university with a thesis on performing and accompanying frevo”folk music traditionally associated with Carnival in Northeastern Brazil.

The artist has also worked as a graduate guitar instructor at UFRJ and continues to conduct Brazilian instrumental music workshops at universities and music schools worldwide.

Today Marques dedicates himself to his solo career. Meanwhile he has performed and recorded with Brazilian stars such as Hermeto Pascoal, Paulo Moura, Guinga, Carlos Malta, Robertinho Silva, Zé Paulo Becker, Nelson Faria, Gilson Peranzzetta, Armandinho, UFRJAZZ Orchestra, Jovino Santos Neto...

Marques has been invited several times to perform at the birthday of Crown Princess Viktoria of Sweden. In 2008 and 2009, these concerts were broadcast live throughout Europe. This year Daniel returns with his Trio to Solliden Castle.
