Born: Dublin, 11th August 1986.

After completing his BA in Jazz Performance at Newpark Music Centre in Dublin in 2008, Matthew travelled to Switzerland where he studied at Lucerne University’s renowned jazz department for a Masters of Arts in Music Performance Degree. In 2004 he received a scholarship to attend the Summer Performance Programme at Berklee College of Music, Boston and in 2007 he attended the SIM summer intensive workshops at the Centre for Improvisational Music, New York. In the summer of 2010 he spent a six-week period in Chennai, South India, learning the region’s traditional Carnatic music at Brhaddhvani with Dr KSS Subramanian. He has also studied drum-kit privately with Jim Black, Gerry Hemingway and Gerald Cleaver and has attended masterclasses with Jason Moran, Steve Coleman, Tim Berne and Vijay Iyer among others.

As well as playing and composing for his own band ‘RedivideR’ - who supported Chris Potter’s Underground at the Galway Jazz Festival 2010 and represented Ireland at the 12 Points Festival in 2011 - Matthew is a working member of Ronan Guilfoyle’s recently reformed ‘Lingua Franca’ group, the German-based ‘ORIGAMI Quartet’ and Swiss-based ‘Blowout Fracture’ and has also performed with some of Ireland’s finest musicians including Michael Buckley and Louis Stewart. Internationally Matthew has performed with saxophonist Evan Parker (UK), trumpeter Peter Evans (USA), violinist Mark Feldman (USA), pianist George Kontrafouris (Greece), the Niels Klein Quartet (Germany) and in 2008 was Ireland’s representative in the European Jazz Orchestra, which toured Europe extensively.
