Alex Churchill

Alex started playing the tenor saxophone while he was a student at Northcote College. After graduating, he studied Jazz Performance at the New Zealand School of Music, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree with First Class Honours. He also competed at the 2009 New Zealand Youth Jazz Competition, where he was awarded the trophy for the “Most Outstanding Young Musician”. Alex has been performing professionally at various festivals since high school, including the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival in the United States, and the Manly Jazz Festival in Sydney, Australia. He has also performed with some of New Zealand’s finest jazz musicians, such as Hollie Smith, Rodger Fox, Phil Broadhurst, Frank Gibson Jr. and Brian Smith along with international artists such as trombonist John Fedchock, and trumpeters Allen Vizzutti and Jon Papenbrook (all from the USA). Alex has also spent a number of years playing in the saxophone sections of some of New Zealand’s finest big bands, including the Rodger Fox Big Band, the Auckland Jazz Orchestra, the New Zealand School of Music Big Band and the New Zealand Youth Jazz Orchestra. Alex’s influences include Kirk Whalum, Michael Brecker, Andrea Lisa, Kenny Garrett, Eric Marienthal and Pat Metheny.
