Maria Romero

Maria Romero was born in Granada Southern Spain. Since childhood she has been profoundly interested in music, perhaps influenced by her mother, a classical piano teacher at the provincial faculty. Over many years she participated as a soloist in 'La Presentacion' under the magnificent direction of Dame Elena Peinado, the choir performing throughout much of Europe.

As a student, Romero studied classical vocals and saxophone, but her real calling was toward vocal improvisation, and in particular black music. Over the years this natural tendency has come to define her unique style. At 18 she was selected to perform vocals for 'The Granada Big Band' and it is from here she focused more intensely on the versatility of Jazz and the use of the voice as an instrument. She has since held voice coaching seminars for SCAEM and participated in numerous arranging and recoding collaborations with Record Companies, Television and Radio. She remains the principal vocal arranger and choral artist for F.J.R. Studios in Granada.

She has also performed in a diverse range of line-ups to include World Music, Rock, Pop, Blues, Gospel and Soul. They include Sumayae, The Blues Band, 4 Women Gospel and Son Soul to name but a few.

More recently Romero has teamed-up with legendary Andalucian jazz guitarist Kiko Aguado in a collaboration that has resulted in performances in Festivals and presentations throughout Spain. This had culminated in the release of a new Album, “AFTER ALL WE GAVE”, featuring original jazz themes with Aguado's melodies carrying charm and elegance, and as always, outstanding Romero vocals sung from the heart.
