Guy Gardner

Studied contemporary music and composition at Dartington College of Arts in Devon. During this time, also began studying with jazz pianist John Horler in London. He Graduated in in 2001 where he began freelancing as a musician around the South West of England. After running various groups and also gaining a PGCE in adult teaching Guy, recorded his first trio album in 2003 entitled Emma’s Dream, featuring the late Jeff Clyne and Trevor Tomkins. This saw him working high profile gigs for the first time, as well as expanding the trio and working with such great saxophonists as Dave O’Higgins and Renato De Aiello. Guy considers this to be his ‘finishing school’ and learnt a lot about the craft of jazz. He then began a long standing collaboration with blues influenced jazz vocalist Sue Hawker. They recorded an album in 2005 entitled My Favourite Sin featuring mostly original songs by Sue and music written by Guy, this toured and gigged, receiving many excellent reviews. Since then Guy has concentrated on building up his playing and also compositional ideas, studying briefly master pianist and composer with John Taylor. He has also worked with Jim Mullen, Roger Beaujolais (which has led to the forming of a band playing original funk material by Guy and Roger), Derek Nash, Mark Nightingale, Martin Shaw and Mornington Locket. The current trio project ‘The Diesis Trio’ is has just finished their first album entitled ‘New Directions’ and features Guy, drummer, Simon Mellish and bass player Richard Jeffries. It features a set of original music by Guy, as well as an arrangements of standards and some surprising takes on classical music and carols.
