David Schulman

Washington City Paper has described David Schulman's music as “spontaneous and completely unique.” Playing his Zeta electric violin through a loop station, David creates layers of strings that shimmer and sway over over frolicsome grooves — or that evoke meditative soundscapes, and lost memories. Music from his late 2012 album “Quiet Life Motel” has aired nationally on NPR's Weekend Edition. David is a regular performer at the DC Jazz Festival, and loves to create “environments for dance.” Fall 2012 commissions include work to create and perform original scores for Stephanie Miracle, Uprooted Dance, and PearsonWidrig Dance Theater. He is currently Musician-in-Residence for Dance Exchange. More info at: quietlifemotel.com and schulmancreative.com

David’s parallel career in radio has allowed David to talk shop with the likes of Benny Golson, Yo-Yo Ma, George Clinton, Cassandra Wilson, Regina Carter, Allen Toussaint, and the late Bo Diddley. “Getting to interview world-class musicians has been a rare gift for me as a player,” says David, who created the 'Musicians in their Own Words' series for public radio. “Phrases from interviews I did years back still ring so vividly in my mind. And What Would Bo Diddley Do?’ isn’t such a bad mantra for an electric violinist.”
