Jeanette Lindstrom

Jeanette Lindström is the jazz singer that prompted legendary producer Quincy Jones to voice the portentous words: "An old soul in a young singer". And also: "She really understands what jazz is all about!" The year was 1995 and Jeanette Lindström made her major breakthrough, on a broad front. The calendar tells us it’s now a different year, and today Jeanette Lindström is one of Sweden's most prized jazz singers.

Jeanette Lindström is one of Sweden’s leading jazz singers and composers. In January she won a Swedish Grammis for Best Jazz Album of the Year with her latest album "Attitude & Orbit Control". She has that ability to set the imagination of the listener in movement - with her voice, her music as well as with her words. Her sixth solo album Attitude & Orbit Control is hard proof. A space odessey of sorts, interpersonal as well as interstellar. Micro- as well as macrocosmic forces at play. Fellow travelers include co-writing guest vocalist Robert Wyatt, a new band and new co-producer and drummer Magnus -ström of e.s.t. as well as lyric contributor Sidsel Endresen. Jeanette Lindström wanted to move on, this time further than before. To write in a new way, to concentrate more on production and instrumentation. She wanted it to really be "Jeanette-music", whatever that would sound like.

Since her albums in 2005 and 2006, "In The Middle Of This Riddle" (original material) and "Whistling Away the Dark" (jazz classics) she has changed record label, started a new band, and further developed her sound, moving forward musically - a long journey with interesting and important encounters. "To work with Robert Wyatt has meant a lot and has been very gratifying. My co-work with Magnus has been decisive, his input tremendously important. We have worked hard and intensely and without him this album would not have become what it has. And of course I am immensely happy and proud of the new band. They are all important parts of this creation." The result is a fresh band that takes on strong tunes, with a focus on pop-like structures, chiselled arrangements and sound. All in all, a totality characterized by its playfulness and seriousness.

Jeanette recorded her debut CD, Another Country, in 1995, after being awarded the “Jazz In Sweden”-prize. She has always been an artist keen to tour, and her travels have since brought her to many parts of the world, the Nordic countries as well as France, Belgium, UK, Japan and Canada.

Jeanette Lindstrom: In the Middle of This Riddle

Read "In the Middle of This Riddle" reviewed by John Kelman

She may not be considered jazz by most (including herself), but singer/songwriter Norah Jones' widespread acclaim--normally afforded artists in the pop mainstream--isn't necessarily a bad thing. If her smoky and understated delivery encourages fans to investigate other singers more clearly associated with jazz there's hope that a certain percentage might actually choose to stick around.

If Norah Jones is the stepping stone then Swedish singer Jeanette Lindström is the bridge with In the Middle of This Riddle. She's capable, at ...

Jeanette Lindstrom - Steve Dobrogosz: Feathers

Read "Feathers" reviewed by Dave Nathan

Feathers travels a different road than Jeanette Lindström's previous albums. Whereas earlier releases had her sounding like an Afro American singer with overtones of Abbey Lincoln and Diane Reeves, her newest is introspective and soft. There is no hint of soul, R & B or anything resembling an up tempo pace. This change of rhythms may have something to do with the label. Her earlier recordings were with the Caprice label which has featured African/Middle Eastern music. Sweden's Prophone, on ...
