Patrick Brown

Born in Charlotte, NC and raised in nearby Gastonia, Patrick has been involved with music since a very young age. He found his first start in music through his church in various choirs. At age 10, Patrick began learning the saxophone, following in the footsteps of his father who is also a saxophonist. He began taking lessons with his father and by high school was focusing on the tenor saxophone and began studying with the highly acclaimed John Alexander. By 11th grade, Patrick found his way playing baritone sax later moving to the second alto chair under his father's lead alto playing in a local big band, the Stardusters. It was during this time with the Stardusters, while receiving encouragement from high school band director Tim Hamilton, that Patrick decided to pursue music as a career.

Patrick pursued his musical passion at Appalachian State University. There he studied tenor saxophone with Dr. William Gora and Rod Berry, with whom he also studied clarinet. Patrick also studied flute privately with Dr. Nancy Scheeloch-Bingham and jazz studies with Todd Wright and Andy Page. Patrick has played with the ASU Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo, Wind Ensemble, Gospel Choir, Jazz Vocal Ensemble, Saxophone Quartet as well as playing clarinet in the Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble. Patrick graduated from ASU in May of 2006 with a BM in Music Performance with a Certification in Jazz Studies. Patrick currently leads his own jazz group, works as a sideman in various bands, and plays in the Piedmont Jazz Collective, an eleven-piece modern big band. Patrick can also be found performing in theatre pit orchestras playing saxophone, clarinet, and flute. Past theatre performances include "Smokey Joe's Cafe," "West Side Story," "Annie Get Your Gun," "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum," "Damn Yankees," and "Crazy For You."

Patrick has performed for such notable venues and festivals as the Blowing Rock Jazz Society, ASU Jazz Festival, NCMEA Conference, Speakeasy Jazz Club in Winston-Salem, American Bandmasters Association, Lees-McRae Summer Theatre, Jazz Discovery Music Festival, East Side Jazz Festival, and the Grove Park Inn Jazz Festival in Asheville, NC. Patrick has also attended the well-known Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Camp. As a member of the Piedmont Jazz Collective, Patrick has been a featured performer aboard the Regent Seven Seas Navigator.
