The Specter of Fritz Weiss

The Specter of Fritz Weiss

Source: All About Jazz

By Scott Krane The last time I wrote about the Israeli old-fashioned jazz musician Shai Brenner, he was entertaining kibbutz members in a bomb shell while Israel was fighting a war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. This time, Shai is reviving the ghost of a jazz musician murdered by Nazis in an extermination camp. On September 28, Shai performed a tribute to Fritz Weiss. Weiss was a bandleader and composer born on the aforementioned date in 1919 in the ...

"Well I dreamt I saw you walking up a hillside in the snow. Casting shadows on the winter sky as you stood there, counting crows. One for sorrow, two for joy. Three for girls and four for boys. Five for silver, six for gold. Seven for a secret never to be told." - “A Murder of One" from “August and Everything After" In the early 1990's, the San Francisco Bay Area [California, USA] gave birth to numerous talented musicians. Trumpeter/composer Allen Vizzutti To Release "Ritzville" Oct. 16

Trumpeter/composer Allen Vizzutti To Release "Ritzville" Oct. 16

Source: Terri Hinte Publicity

Trumpet virtuoso Allen Vizzutti has enjoyed a prolific career as performer and educator in both the jazz and classical fields since his early days with Woody Herman’s big band and his notable four-year tenure with Chick Corea. The release of Vizzutti’s superb new CD Ritzville, on October 16, is an especially welcome event because the in-demand trumpeter/composer has recorded all too infrequently as a leader. Ritzville brings the focus back to his primary passion of “performing music I love with ...

The news of his passing comes from guitarist Steve Schenkel, who on Tuesday posted a message on Facebook with remembrances of Fritz. The pianist, who lived in Webster Groves, apparently had been in poor health for some time, but no cause of death was mentioned. Eddie Fritz's career stretched back to St. Louis' Gaslight ...

Source: Sound Insights by Doug Payne

The 1974 sequel to Ralph Bakshi's bizarre 1972 animated film Fritz the Cat is this equally wacky film, confusingly dubbed The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat. Directed by Robert Taylor—a storyboard artist who has since gone onto things like The Flintstone Kids, Ducktales (1988) and The Rugrats Movie (1998)—this sequel is a trip, both as a story and as a film. And like many trips, it depends whether you consider it a good one or bad. Substance abuse can ...
