Sarah Weller

Sarah got into jazz while studying Media Performance in Manchester but found her way into a Northern-House band with John O'Donnell and DJ Aitch (PSV) called Hallucinogen 10. They released a 12" in 1992 called "Rhythm Inside My Soul" which became an underground club anthem. Moved down to London and joined an all girl band called "Ruby Said She's Scarlet" before recording for songwriter Rupert Wates. She sang Jazz, Funk and Soul with various function bands before being recommended as a singer to Dave Rawlings and Paul Mundy (Jazz Vandall's) via an exporter to whom she was selling Brazilian rarities and re-issues to! Becoming the main vocal element on the Jazz Vandall's third album before hooking up with guitarist and musician Simon Golding in 1997 and forming the Urban Dwellers with Paul. In 1999 she got into the finals of the Perrier Jazz Awards and it was there Mark Doyle (Hed Kandi) took an interest in the band and commissioned an album of jazzy chilled out music. Her main influences remain Jean Carne, Flora Purim, Ella Fitzgerald, Janet Lawson, Kurt Elling, George Benson, Barbra Streisand and the list goes on...

She is about to release her debut album under the Sarah Weller Band name called Stormy, a mix of bossa, jazz, and samba fusion.

Amazon.co.uk Review Rooted in jazz, soul and blissed-out dance music, Urban Dwellers are poised to make the strains of life evaporate away. Shop Worn Angel, a collection of cool, grown-up ambient tracks gently directed by a sweet, understated vocal, is certainly music that demands very little effort. "Lover Man", a languid take on the classic jazz standard, gently nudges the album into action. This mind-caressing mood permeates the whole project. Vocalist Sarah Weller possesses a fine voice, wrapping her sultry tones around a selection of original head-nodding tunes, while reinterpreting oldies like Nat King Cole's "On The Street Where You Live" as intelligent, modern chill-out. Admittedly it's the height of coffee table introspection, often wandering into that dangerous territory marked noodling. However, the idea is simple: place CD in tray, pour large, iced drink, hop into hammock and let this nouveau jazz with a twist relax you like musical valium. Feeling better? —Paul Tierney
