Sasha's Bloc
With a big-band sound that recalls the vibe of New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band infused with the Blues, a hint of Gypsy Jazz, contemporary jazz and swing, Sasha’s Bloc have been playing to sold-out shows across Southern California for the past two+ years and have developed a loyal following across the country.
Formed in 2012 by bassist Alexander Gershman who hails from Moscow, Sasha’s Bloc is an eclectic mix of musicians focused on the revival of the jazz culture of the 1920’s and 30’s, combined with the adaptation of modern jazz original compositions.
BAND MEMBERS:
Alex Gershman - Bass Guitar and Band Leader of Sasha’s Bloc Alex was born in Moscow, Russia. He has always heard music well and started playing on his own in high school in a small band. He then played throughout medical school in different jazz bands playing piano and bass, and acoustic guitars. He played in various venues in Russia with many accomplished jazz musicians and performed in jam sessions with major horn players and big bands in Moscow. His most passion always remained in Jazz of 1920’s and 30s. In 2012 Alex assembled his first jazz band Sasha’s Bloc. The first record produce by Joe Diblasi in early 2012 was a collection of Jazz Standards influenced by gipsy jazz. Sasha’s Bloc enjoyed the success in 60 live performances in the best Jazz clubs in LA. In the end of 2012 Alex started his work on the original songs and completed the collection in January of 2013 leading to the recording of the first original CD Melancholy. Alex Gershman MD, PhD is a Clinical Professor of Urology UCLA Medical Center, Chief of Laparoscopic Urologic Surgery Harbor UCLA Medical Center, Director of Institute of Advanced Urology at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, President of American- Russian Medical Association.
Sergey Chipenko – Piano Sergei Chipenko started to play piano when he was 5 years old. Through his education in the best music institutions in Russia Sergei acquired the richest professional background. Despite his interests in classical music he developed unconditional love to jazz and jazz-rock and continued his career as an artist and a composer. Sergei played concert in Moscow and United States together with very famous musicians; David Sanborn, David Mann, Nicky Richards, Phil Perry, Dave Koz, Brian Simpson, Richard Elliot, Mindi Abair, Eric Marienthal, Chuck Loeb, Jeff Lorber, Jimmy Haslip, Will Kennedy, Janna-Sergei Chipenko & Dave Koz, Jeff Lorber&Will Kennedy. He has a wide range of skills and musical styles that mirror his background.
