Sonny Red: Sonny Red.

Sonny Red is not your household name when it comes to alto sax players. Although Red played with Blakey, Curtis Fuller, Paul Quinichette, Donald Byrd, Grant Green and Blue Mitchell, to name a few, he still never became well known and this is a shame because he adds a unique voice to the alto. He died in 1981.

Sylvester “Sonny Red” Kyner, Jr. was part of the fruitful exodus of Detroit jazzmen to New York in the late 1950s. Though his style was steeped in the deft architectures of Bebop his sound and approach also incorporated a healthy fascination with earlier traditions. This disc dusts off two of his sessions for the Jazzland label and delivers a substantial program of mainly originals from a player who should have recorded more often.

If trumpeter Clifford Brown had a musical doppelgänger, it would probably be Blue Mitchell. Like Brown, Mitchell had a forceful, fleshy trumpet tone and a lyrical sophistication on runs and improvisation. There was a bouncy beauty and grace to Mitchell's playing, but he also could turn up the heat to make a point.
