Rob Susman: Top Secret Lab

Read "Top Secret Lab" reviewed by Jack Bowers

Trombonist Rob Susman, who is inclined to dwell on the cutting edge of contemporary jazz, remains “out there" for the most part on Top Secret Lab, an album wherein his splendid nonet is challenged by half a dozen of Susman's intricate compositions (and two others) and aces every test without any detectable missteps or errant notes. The question is whether Susman's blend of old-school funk with more modern design might whet a listener's appetite. And the answer ...

Stan Killian: Brooklyn Calling

Read "Brooklyn Calling" reviewed by Richard J Salvucci

Years ago, a group of folks were having dinner at a Westside San Antonio, Texas, restaurant known as Los Barrios. Occasionally, some restaurants there would start a jazz policy. In a place better known for mariachis, this would be a pleasant surprise. One Friday evening, some kid was playing tenor sax, quite a bit of tenor sax, in fact. The guy's name—because getting his card seemed like a good idea—was Stan Killian, not a familiar one among the roll of ...

Funk Shui NYC: Shark NATO on a Plane

Read "Shark NATO on a Plane" reviewed by Jack Bowers

While some older listeners (and younger ones as well) may be thrown slightly off-kilter and find it hard to apprehend exactly what Funk Shui NYC is about, it must be conceded that the New York-based ensemble in all likelihood represents the future of big-band jazz, or at least a sizeable and assertive chunk of it. The name itself offers an explicit clue, as Funk Shui is indeed heavy on the funk (rather less on the shui, whatever that is), as ...

Stan Killian: Unified

Read "Unified" reviewed by Bruce Lindsay

Unified is tenor saxophonist Stan Killian's third album and his debut for the Sunnyside label. It's high-quality, straight-ahead modern jazz, played with a real swing by Killian and his band, and enlivened by the contributions of three top-drawer guest horn players. Leader/composer Killian hails from Texas, home of Texas tenors like Arnett Cobb and Illinois Jacquet. Killian's own sound certainly has a big, wide open, feel to it but there's a gentleness there as well, a warmth ...

Stan Killian: Unified

Read "Unified" reviewed by Raul d'Gama Rose

Stan Killian is one of those voices that doesn't make a great deal of noise, especially on Unified. His tenor saxophone is by no means a quiet one, but his is a voice filled with a mature gravitas that seems to emerge from a deeper sense of wisdom. His tone is resonant and echoes with mellow grandeur. His colors are rich and reflect the depths to which the tenor saxophone can reach, while still remaining accessible to encompass tender emotions. ...

Stan Killian - Unified (2011)

Source: Something Else!

Stan Killian's Unified is an attractive album right from the first listen. Actually, even before that first listen. Checking out the names of horn players playing alongside Killian listed on the back cover of the CD case, I saw there was already a recipe for success: Dave Binney (alto sax), Jeremy Pelt (trumpet) and Roy Hargrove (trumpet). But upon taking in this album, it became appealing for another reason, a reason I couldn't nail down until I read these words ...
