Read "Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers – Blue Note 1517" reviewed by Marc Davis

And now we reach the point in our program entitled, “What's The Point?" As in: You already know this album, you may already own this album, and yet here we are, discussing an album that's 59 years old and so widely synonymous with hard bop and Blue Note Records that it was featured on the promo page of All About Jazz's special magazine dedicated to All Things Blue Note. In other words, it's like trying to ...

The Jazz Messengers at the Café Bohemia, Volumes 1 and 2 – Blue Note 1507 and 1508

Read "The Jazz Messengers at the Café Bohemia, Volumes 1 and 2 – Blue Note 1507 and 1508" reviewed by Marc Davis

Is it possible for a band to be both legendary and underrated? The Jazz Messengers at the Café Bohemia makes that case. Jazz fans know the Jazz Messengers is the definitive, go-to band for straight-ahead hard bop. Art Blakey was both master drummer and master talent scout--the man who co-founded and sustained the celebrated group. For all his talents as a trailblazing harp bop drummer, Blakey's probably better known for discovering and nurturing several generations of jazz in ...

Jazz 625: Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

On March 7, 1965, Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers appeared on the BBC-TVs Jazz 625, hosted by Humphrey Lyttelton. The video of the performance was recently colorized, which gives the musicians enormous dimension and visual personality. The music was always great. The color just makes the presentation a little greater. The Jazz Messengers on this date consisted of Art Blakey (d), Lee Morgan (tp), John Gilmore (ts), John Hicks (p) and Victor Sproles (b). Here's Art Blakey & the ...

The History of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers (Blue Note, 1992)

The History of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers (Blue Note, 1992)

Source: Music and More by Tim Niland

During his lengthy career that stretched from the late 1940's to the late 1980's, drummer Art Blakey was at the forefront of bebop and hard-bop jazz. His band would become an incubator for young jazz talent, many of whom went on to have significant careers in the music. This three-disc set presents highlights from Blakey's recordings, and while by no means a comprehensive summation (Mosaic once did a six disc boxed set about one year of Blakey's music, 1960) it ...

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - The Sesjun Radio Shows (2011)

Source: Something Else!

Art Blakey is spoken about a lot in our little 'berg on the internet, and like most other admirers of his Jazz Messengers body of work, we tend to focus more on the late 50s-mid 60s era that included so many future jazz icons like Freddie Hubbard, Johnny Griffin, Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons, Benny Golson, Wayne Shorter, Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton, etc., etc. What's sometimes overlooked is the fact that Blakey had never stopped mentoring future jazz stars. As Nick ...

Rita Reys and the Jazz Messengers

Rita Reys and the Jazz Messengers

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

As far as I can tell, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers recorded behind a singer only once. That session took place in May and June 1956 in New York and was released on Columbia and the Netherlands' Philips label, which makes perfect sense since the vocalist was Rita Reys, a Dutch jazz singer. Interestingly, the result was quite good, making one wish the Jazz Messengers had departed every so often from instrumentals to back hip vocalists like Johnny Hartman. ...
