Drummer and teacher Thomas Taylor, Jr. was born in Elizabeth City, N.C. Thomas is one of the southeast's most in demand drummers. Jazz artists, Eli Yamin, (piano), Cedar Walton, (piano), Bill Charlap, (piano), Mark Levine, (piano), Tom Browne, (trumpet), Mark Whitfield, (guitar), Larry Coryell, (guitar), Eric Alexander (Tenor Sax), Don Braden, (Tenor Sax), Fred Wesley, (trombone), Joe Chambers, (percussion), Kevin Mahogany, (vocal), and Vanessa Rubin, (vocal), are some who have performed in the Southeast and called on him to help the music swing. Thomas began teaching at North Carolina Central University in 1996 and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2004. He has taught with Jamey Aebersold’s Summer Jazz camps, and is an in demand clinician throughout the Southeast. Thomas has recorded with Ken Rhodes, Steve Haines quintet, Baron Tymas, Jim Ketch, Ira Wiggins, and has his own self-titled CD’s. Thomas has written articles for music and drumming magazines and has written a textbook “Yo’ Check this: Topics on Hip hop”.
