Tom Luther

Tom Luther is an improvising composer and pianist working in acoustic and electronic media. He has performed throughout the state of Maine with his modern jazz group TLQ(Tom Luther Quintet), an ambient music trio called Algorithm, and as a soloist. In his work, Luther crosses multiple genres and draws freely from his experiences in numerous musical forms. The messages and stories are universal, and genre is simply a cultural idiom appropriate to a certain group at a certain time. Luther explores these notions through adapting techniques from difference genres to create hybrid works that straddle the worlds of jazz, classical, and ambient music, bending genre and blurring the boundaries that define them.

The TLQ has performed live on Maine Public Radio's "Friday Night Jazz", and appeared at the inaugural Free Range Music Festival in Belfast, Maine. The group's debut album, "Everything is Blue" was released in August 2012, and is available on I-tunes, Amazon, and CD Baby. The electronic and spoken word group Algorithm was a featured performer for the "Elegant Enigmas" exhibit of Edward Gorey's work at the Portland Public Library.

Luther's most far reaching and involved work to date was The September Project, a year long music composition blog. The September Project was a real time project spanning from September 2011 until September 2012. Everyday for the year's time, Luther would write, record, and post a piece of music. The music varied in length and style, and often took on particular themes for several days. Sometimes Luther wrote commentary, and other times simply posted an accompanying word or photograph.

Current projects in production are: A second TLQ album in production, scheduled for release in the Spring of 2015 The debut Algorithm album, "Underneath Oblivion", in post production and scheduled for release in April 2015 A solo trip hop/downtempo eletronic performance project, to be debuted in the early summer of 2015 "Inventions", a solo performance/recording of all 15 two-part inventions of J.S. Bach, with connecting piano improvisations, initial performances scheduled for the fall of 2015 "Portraits in Solitude, an extended performance suite for TLQ and additional musicians, and spoken word, inspired by Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude.
