Tom Zlabinger

TOM ZLABINGER is a full-time instructor of music at York College / CUNY and the director of the York College Big Band and the York College Blue Notes & Summer Jazz Program. He is a professional bass player and an ethnomusicologist with a focus on jazz.

He holds a BA in music from Grinnell College, an MA in jazz performance from Queens College/CUNY, and a PhD in ethnomusicology from the Graduate Center/CUNY. His bass teachers have included Bob Anderson (Minnesota Orchestra), Terry Burns, Anthony Cox, Leon Lee Dorsey, Mark Dresser, and Rich Mollin.

Over the years he has performed at such places as Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center, and Off-Broadway. He has also shared the stage with a wide range of musicians, including Glenn Branca, Lukas Foss, Wycliffe Gordon, William Hooker, Zane Massey, Ras Moshe, William Parker, and Wally "Gator" Watson.
