Tony Vella

Tony Vella, pianist, organist, composer, arranger and orchestra director , been born to Terrasini (Palermo), in activity from 1957, have acquired immense experience working, to the foreign country with big and small formations and in Italy like main arranger, for some important record houses. In Palermo from the 1972, beyond that to the concert's activity, he has dedicated to cultural activities and the formation of young talents holding theory course, practical instrumental and ensemble music applied to the jazz music.

In ` the '75 it has participated to "Pescara the Jazz Festival" with the New Jazz Society of Palermo, the only Italian group, united to Zoot Sims quartet, Antony Braxton, Elvin Jones quintet, Red Norvo trio, Chet Baker quartet, Charles Mingus Group, Roland Kirk quintet and Don Cherry Organic Music Theatre.

In ` the '77 it has taken part to the artistic activity introduced from the Reinhardt center to the Politeama Theatre for the Independent Agency the Maximum Theatre of Palermo.

In ` the '78 it has constituted and directed "l' Orchestra" in collaboration with the Reinhardt center for the concerts season organized from the "Associazione Siciliana Amici della Musica" introduced to Auditorium SS. Salvatore of Palermo.

In ` the '84 he has taken part to the "7� Messina Jazz Meeting" with the Brass Group Big Band, in the quality of orchestra director and arranger.

In ` the '84 -`85 With the assignment of stable director of "The Brass Group Big Band" he has held various concerts in the meridione and has collaborated with musicians of international reputation which: Archie Shepp; Hernie Wilkins; Mel Lewis; Sam Rivers; Toshiko Akiyoshi; Paolo Lepore; Franco Cerri; Danilo Terenzi.

In ` the '90 - '96 it has constituted "The Tony Vella Fusion Jazz Band" entirely composed from young Sicialian musicians; a big band, in short, able to propose a polyvalent music-show on the model of some great Americans orchestras (to begin from that one of Quincy Jones). The Fusion Jazz Band, in its performances, has demonstrated a good harmony, a sonorous forehead of remarkable thickness, a particular cure in the preparation of the arrangements and a happiest propension to a immenser approach repertoire that does not scorn Brazilian frequentations or POP-jazz (N.d.R.)
