TRIO 3(lake/workman/cyrille)/BIO

TRIO 3 is a band where Music is the Leader. This unconventional collaboration of internationally- recognized jazz masters, Oliver Lake (multi- reeds), Reggie Workman (bass) and Andrew Cyrille (drums), formed to centralize the members creative energies, promoting a single governing principle - Organized Improvisation. Each is a distinct soloist but it’s definitely an unadulterated group-based effort. Open to the infinite possibilities, TRIO 3 mixes and explores different colors, transversing the whole vocabulary of jazz, taking the music to the future.

Collectively, TRIO 3 spans over 130 years of jazz history having played with pivotal artists of jazz and modern music including John Coltrane, Mary Lou Williams, Herbie Mann, Art Blakey, The World Saxophone Quartet, Lou Reed, Richard Muhal Abrams, Cecil Taylor and more.

Deeply rooted in the tradition, these jazz veterans describe their sound as “futuristic music within the idiomatic continuum of jazz.” Like musical alchemists, TRIO 3 boldly carries the music forward spinning 3-dimensional jazz, reconfiguring jazz conventions of compositions, harmony, meter and melody.

According to Lake, “None of us assumes the position of drummer or of a saxophone player or drummer. We're each "one third of a unit that makes music, each capable of taking responsibility at the time that it is needed to make that music. With that in mind and with that “kind our mind,” TRIO 3’s music becomes unique.”

TRIO 3 has recently invited guest artists to expand upon their core. Guest artists have included pianist Jason Moran with the group performing and recording with Pianists Irene Schweizer and Geri Allen. Their recent efforts have garnered critical acclaim with their collaborations with Ms. Allen resulting in a much-awaited CD and repeat performance at the famed Birdland, both scheduled for August 2009.

Our future goals are to continue to produce and record new creative projects; to continue to invite guest to collaborate with the trio’s aesthetic. Marketing wise, we want to further brand the group and to self-produce CD’s to insure the perpetuation our creative efforts.

And so it is with TRIO 3- Borderless, freely taking flights of fancy from ragtime to no-time, fiery rapid-fire ostinatos to slow, blues and modal vamps, mixing original compositions with avant-garde, traditional jazz, blues, bebop and beyond " with their audiences gleefully along for the ride!

Trio 3 comprises familiar faces on the European concert circuit. The group's earliest release was a concert appearance from the 1992 Swiss Willisau festival, and it has been making regular European tours ever since. Tonight Trio 3 appeared with Swiss pianist Irene Schweizer at Amsterdam's wonderful Bimhuis on the fourth date of a nine-venue European tour.

Altoist Oliver Lake, bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Andrew Cyrille co-founded Trio 3 in 1988 but didn't record their first album Live in Willisau (Dizzim) until four years later, only releasing it in 1997. Wha's Nine, recorded live in Paris in October 2007 and only their fifth CD, is a gem of a document that helps fill out the group's slender discography. At the penultimate set of their four-night stand at Birdland in late July--a simultaneous CD ...

Trio 3: Time Being

Read "Time Being" reviewed by Nic Jones

These three men have been working together for some time, and the more time passes, the more obvious it becomes that they should go on doing so. If some list of arbitrary criteria that makes for stimulating improvised music were to be written up, these three would score highly. They display individual expression in abundance within a group context, for example, while it seems to be the case that these men bring their wealth of musical experience to bear on ...

Trio 3: Open Ideas

It would be hard to assemble a trio of more open- and high-minded jazz artists than Andrew Cyrille, Oliver Lake and Reggie Workman. These veterans of the avant-jazz wars, joining forces as Trio 3 on their third album since '97, combine musical excellence and compositional skills with a shared sensibility that's well summed up by the album's title, Open Ideas. Reggie Workman has long been one of the most technically gifted of all bassists, a brilliant player whose versatile style ...
