Richard Sorce: Bossambal Brazil

Read "Bossambal Brazil" reviewed by Edward Blanco

Long-time proponent of the Brazilian style of music, pianist Richard Sorce presents his fourth album as leader with the light and graceful Bossambal Brazil, offering 14 fresh original compositions showcasing bossa novas, sambas and soft ballads, all designed to remind us that there is a gentle side of jazz which appeals to those who know how to appreciate the art. As on all his previous recordings, Sorce reassembles the same combination of instruments--piano or electric piano, bass, ...

Vinnie Cutro Trio: Montclair, NJ, April 3, 2011

Vinnie Cutro TrioTrumpets Jazz ClubMontclair, NJApril 3, 2011 Vinnie Cutro's opening set at Trumpets Jazz Club wasn't weighed down or overshadowed by history. The gig closely followed the release of the trumpeter's The Music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, this year on Royal Music Ensembles Records. A couple of things separated the live performance from typical salutes to revered artists of the jazz tradition. Instead of offering lengthy monologues on the significance of ...

Vinnie Cutro & New York City Soundscape (with Mike Stern): Aberration

Read "Aberration" reviewed by Matthew S. Robinson

This album by Vinnie Cutro presents an interesting combination of featured guest artist and title. For the most part, it is Mike Stern’s washy technical noodling that makes for the aberrations on this otherwise authentic jazz exploration. With tracks by Woody Shaw ("Beyond All Limits"), Duke Ellington ("Sentimental Mood") and James Moody ("Moody’s Mood"), this album opens, closes and is greatly composed of rhythmic compositions colored by Cutro and Jones’ frilly and fiery brass. When Stern comes to play on ...

Trumpeter Vinnie Cutro & New York City Soundscape Release "Sakura"

Source: All About Jazz

On Sakura, his 4th album as a leader, trumpeter Vinnie Cutro presents a set of straight ahead mainstream jazz that extends the legacy of such hard-driving bands as Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and the 1950s quintets led by Horace Silver and Miles Davis. Cutro contributes 6 originals and a haunting arrangement of the familiar traditional Japanese melody “Sakura," the CD's title track. The band--including master drummer Billy Hart and the acclaimed saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi--also delivers a suitably wistful ...

Vinnie Cutro--a powerhouse musician of vigor and invention--shines on Sakura, his fifth CD.

Here--working with an ace crew of tenor saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi, trombonist Bob Ferrel, pianists Charles Blenzig and Mitch Schechter, bassist Jay Anderson, and drummer Billy Hart--Cutro offers six vibrant originals, three reworked jazz standards, and a vital interpretation of a Japanese folk song.

The trumpeter--whose inspirations include Woody Shaw and Lee Morgan-- talks about the improvisational and compositional concepts heard on Sakura. “While I always keep the basic elements of structure and swing, I’m experimenting more with intervals, like 4ths, 5ths, major sevenths,” he says. “Those challenging intervals create a more open, more modern sound.” Indeed, Sakura is packed with engaging, potent music, music that mixes rich melodic warmth with the bristling excitement of adventurous ideas. Among the many gems: the anthem-like title track; the surging waltz, “Three for Me”; the riveting ballad, “Willow Weep for Me”; the open-minded, funky “Big Chief”; the driving “What is This Thing?”
