Album Description

Adam De Lucia produced and mixed "96 Heartbeats Per Minute" as well as composed with inspiration from "Move On Up" by Curtis Mayfield. The title of the composition is a direct reference that the heartbeat is the tempo of the song. A saxophone arrangement played by Michael Ghegan develops the funk and introduces featured guitar (Tom Monda) à la Grant Green while a composed keyboard break adds to the distinctive character. In the A section, Mayfield's funk vernacular is translated to jazz changes in a 12 bar cycle. Its broken rhythm is contrasted to the flowing B.

Guitar, keyboard, and bass were recorded direct, then reamped to separate the process of recording the best takes from producing the right tone. Equipment was selected to convey classic sounds at Lakehouse Recording Studios in Asbury Park, NJ; for example, the Ampeg Portaflex and Fender amplifiers from the period. A Neve 8024, one of the few remaining in existence, colored the recordings for a glued-together sound. The final mix was mastered on tape with an Otari MTR-10 by Tim Pannella at Lakehouse to complete a classic, soul jazz sound.

Brian Lawlor plays keyboards throughout with Cody McCorry (electric bass) and Jordan Perlson (drums) rounding out the rhythm section.

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
