Album Description

Marek Napiórkowski is one of the most exciting guitar players. On stage he can measure up to any jazz star and play like an equal. He always brings to the music his unique artistic personality and challenges the other players to follow him. He gives us the impression that he can easily and effortlessly play anything, yet he works very hard constantly challenging himself to achieve perfection. That perfection is beautifully matched by his limitless imagination. His new album surprises the listener with yet another transition. Some musicians in his new band are from New York, a city that is close to the heart of every jazzman in the world. Some are Polish, hence the title „WAW-NYC” – like on the air luggage tag. New music written by Napiórkowski shows a wide spectrum of emotions. There’s a relentless energy in it. His guitar solos have a narrative of their own and they always tell a story. Pulsating power often underlines even his lyrical pieces, however when the player switches to acoustic guitar, his music reveals new elements: reflection, even tenderness. Napiórkowski needs great musicians to help him to materialize his artistic ideas. His new band supports him to the fullest extent, showing great feel and complete understanding of his compositions. The pianist Manuel Valera is of Cuban descent and his musical heritage is often reflected on this record. His piano either fuels the guitar solos or speaks on its own. The rhythm section creates its individual language. The drummer, Clarence Penn, has played with many jazz greats, including Dizzy Gillespie. Robert „In Demand” Kubiszyn (and it’s about time he starts using this nickname officially), is a double bass and a bass guitar genius. He is always able to create amazing bass foundations which allow other musicians comfortably showcase their talents. The group excels when it is extended to a quintet with a special guest, one of the giants of contemporary jazz scene, Chris Potter, playing both the tenor sax and the bass clarinet in „The Way”. Marek Napiórkowski’s music is constantly evolving. All his new projects derive from the previous ones, at once surpassing them. At this time he enraptures his listeners with a new international quartet and a collection of brand new compositions. And how will he surprise us in the future? We shall hear that. For now I’d rather say: Not so fast, Mark! Let us fully enjoy your wonderful music. Both gripping and contemplative, so Polish and so American. And always so much your own. Daniel Wyszogrodzki
