By 2000 he was called to play in Courtney Pine?s band this collaboration lasted for a year after which Alex wanted to focus on his own projects and establishing his own band. He also began recording the album that was to become R&B Latino. In 2001 Alex picked up the BBC Rising Star Jazz Award.
