Album Description

Dan Wilensky’s seventh recording as a leader All In All features Portland, Oregon veterans Clay Giberson (piano, B3, rhodes, synthesizer) and Bill Athens (acoustic bass), and a superb young newcomer on the scene, Micah Hummel (drums and percussion) collaborating on 12 Wilensky originals and 1 cover. About The Music: “It’s no secret that musicians are often propelled by the Sturm and Drang of their times. The angst of the last few years compelled many of us to speak out, to write and play with the big picture in mind, and also to remember how lucky we are to do what we do. I composed the music for All In All during the last two weeks of December, 2019, and the first week of 2020. It was one of the most fertile periods I can remember. I wrote every morning and night, and ended up with 20 new compositions. I picked my favorite dozen for this project, and added my arrangement of a joyous gospel classic, Soon and Very Soon. (We recorded in a church, so I guess that track is blessed!) Then, of course, the project was put on hold due to the Covid-19 disaster. But I realized that – along with protecting my family and helping people in need – recording this music was the most important contribution I could make. I’m pleased to be able to finally share the result with you. I chose the musicians for this recording based on their selfless dedication to craft, their ecumenical musical proclivities, and because we’ve all worked together in various bands and always have a blast on and off the stage. More than ever, our collective effort in service of the material ruled the day, which made my gig as producer/saxophonist/composer/arranger a tad less stressful! It was thrilling to experience this live energy, this musical symbiosis that’s so illusive in the studio environment. I hope you’ll listen from start to finish with open ears, and remember Thomas Carlyle’s lovely homage to our chosen profession:‘Music is well said to be the speech of angels; in fact, nothing among the utterances allowed to man is felt to be so divine. It brings us near to the infinite.’” –Dan Wilensky, April 2020.
