Anthony Pirog

Anthony Pirog is a guitarist who currently lives in New York City but honed his unique take on freely improvised music while living in the Washington DC area. He is a guitarist well versed in many genres of music and performs as a solo musician, in a duo with cellist Janel Leppin and leads his own trio and sextet. As a composer, he is adventurous and explores the possibilities that the guitar, both acoustic and electric, has to offer. He has recently released his first solo CD on Sonic Mass Records titled Beginning to End, which is a collection of guitar improvisations.

Mr. Pirog has mastered the use of many effects pedals and his performances produce an eclectic set of improvisations. He has toured the U.S. extensively and performed with Elliott Sharp and Mary Halvorson and has opened for such people as Peter Brotzmann, Andrea Parkins, Susan Alcorn, Marshall Allen, Evan Parker, Alan Licht, Jandek, Matmos and Eugene Chadbourne. Joel Harrison &. Anthony Pirog: The Great Mirage

Read "The Great Mirage" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

The gritty, jammy sonics of the leadoff title track quickly convince the listener that avant guitarists Joel Harrison and Anthony Pirog are hellbent on getting it all out of their systems on The Great Mirage. Bassist Stephan Crump, who lays down his acoustic bass and goes electric, and daredevil drummer Allison Miller, who has absolutely no problem going from zero-to-eternity and cymbal splash to pure bash, sign on and hell breaks loose: witness the obstinate, speed-rock take on ...

Where Is Home: Janel & Anthony and Palo Colorado Dream: Anthony Pirog

Modern era guitar heroes such as Nels Cline, Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell are expressive stylists, possessing distinct ways of conveying a narrative amid branded and well-defined stylizations. No need to compare, but from a fundamental standpoint, these gents and other elite craftsmen bear the goods that often transcend the norm or anticipated methods of spinning a tune or two. However, members of the elite are students of more than one genre. They absorb the merits of Americana, classical, jazz, ...

Anthony Pirog: Palo Colorado Dream

Read "Palo Colorado Dream" reviewed by Jeffrey Uhrich

Guitarist Anthony Pirog fearlessly pushes boundaries with his provocative debut album, Palo Colorado Dream. Pirog's unabashed and inventive use of effects and loops, in combination with his dazzling knowledge of the various sounds his guitar is capable of creating, draws the listener into his own unique and expressive musical world. Palo Colorado Dream is not for the faint of heart. Pirog can quickly move from a seductive and tranquil atmosphere of chime-like echoes to the sonic bombast of a finely ...
