Ben Bowen

Ben studied jazz trumpet at York University and Humber College, and has played and recorded as a sideman with a number of notable Canadian musicians, including Great Aunt Ida, Ronley Teper, Kevin Hearn, Lily Frost, Valery Gore, Brian MacMillan, A Northern Chorus, and Tamara Williamson among them. He has appeared onstage with Sarah Harmer, Ron Sexsmith, the Rheostatics, Tony Dekker, Jason Collett, Kurt Swinghammer, and Justin Rutledge, and will be featured on 2008 albums by Nick Zubeck, Metal Kites, the DoneFors, Valery Gore, and Ronley Teper.

He currently plays trumpet and mellophone in the Toronto-based Book of Gnomes, an electroacoustic collaboration between Nick Zubeck (Barzin, Polmo Popo, Great Lake Swimmers), Darren Wall (Harry Pickens, Barzin, Delfeayo Marsalis), Marshall Bureau (A Northern Chorus, Erika Werry, Nick Zubeck), and Ben Bowen (Great Aunt Ida, A Northern Chorus, Junetile). The music, primarily in the form of multi-part instrumental “indie rock jazz” suites, combines elements of pop and folk music with ambience and improvisation.

”Book of Gnomes is a music geek's dream band. Professional instrumental jazz musicians experimenting with Indie Rock, Jazz and Electronica mixed in. If you like to watch top notch improvisation, don't miss 'The Gnomes'”
