Album Description
I'm first and foremost a bassist - but one that also composes, arranges and occasionally sings. "Bicho Músico" ("Music Beast", on a loose translation) is intended as a portrait of my dual artistic persona, split between two different musical domains (that of Jazz/instrumental Music and that of Pop/Rock), the resulting product of 27 years of sideman work touring and recording with Pop/Rock/MPB artists as well as gigging weekly in the trenches of the Jazz realm. I like to call my mix of Jazz, Pop and Brazilian styles "Jazz Atmosférico" (Atmospheric Jazz). I used my trio (bass, guitar and drums) as a "template" from which I developed my compositions working with the most basic elements (melody, rhythm and harmony). Since I didn't want to be constrained to the trio format on the pop songs (and even on the through-composed instrumental track "Totorello"), I added more instruments to the fold as I developed the arrangements, and on some songs they grew into more intricate orchestrations. I don't limit myself to any pre-conceived formats or aesthetics, but I am mostly interested in music that "breathes" and "sweats". Music that sounds "human" and is the result of the interaction between the musicians involved in the creative process. Therefore, I did not resort to digital gimmicks to correct any imperfection or to tune any vocal or instrumental line. Digital editing was used only on some solos to combine two or more takes into a third, "preferable" one. What you will hear is what was actually played, warts and all. With the exception of a few guitar parts, the material was recorded on my own home-studio (8VB Studio), and I produced and mixed it myself. I was very lucky to have high-pedigreed music beasts onboard on this endeavor that could allow me to be this cocky: drummers Marcelinho da Costa and Cássio Cunha; guitarists Billy Brandão, Humberto Mirabelli, Bernardo Bosisio and Chester Lukas Harlan; saxophonists AC and Henrique Band; trombonist Everson Moraes; trumpet player Aquiles Moraes; keyboardist Humberto Barros and singer/songwriting partner Joani Taylor. I admit having sophisticated ambitions and a punk, DIY ethos - a paradoxal combination, but one that is becoming a common trend among true "bichos-músicos" of the digital age…
