Björn Lücker

The musical background of Hamburg drummer Björn Lücker spans Jazz and classical, experimental and improvised music, all the way to contemporary Rock and crossover projects, as well as poetry soundtracks. His fusion of the sounds of contemporary classical music with the drive and agility of Jazz leads to a soundscape, which turns drums and cymbals into a lead instrument, exploring new dimensions of collaboration with other musicians.

After many years as percussionist and timpanist in orchestral and contemporary classical music, Björn Lücker studied Jazz at the Hochschule für Musik Und Theater in Hamburg, among others with Daniel Humair, Tony Oxley, John Marshall, Ronnie Stephenson and Alex Riel. Through workshops with Dieter Glawischnig, Anthony Braxton, Chuck Israels, Barry Guy, Vinko Globokar, Bob Mintzer, Wynton Marsalis and Maria Schneider he was introduced to a wide variety of styles of Jazz and improvised music.

Alongside several projects in Germany and abroad, he achieved international acclaim as co-founder and co-leader of the group "Triocolor" (with Jens Thomas on piano and Stefan Weeke on bass), which won many accolades, including 1st place at the European Jazz Contest, Brussels, 1994 and a place in the final of the European Jazz Competition, Leverkusen, also in 1994. Mainly as ambassadors for the German Goethe Institute, he toured extensively in South East Asia, West Africa, Central America, Turkey, the Balkans, Greece, the UK, France, Scandinavia and Russia.

He worked with Jazz greats such as Walter Norris, Benny Bailey, Howard Johnson, Jimmy Woode, Simon Nabatov, Nils Wogram, Wolfgang Schlüter, Elliott Sharp, Dusko Goykovich, as well as the NDR Big Band, the Big Band of Hessische Rundfunk and the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also recorded many CDs, both under his own name and as accompanist.
