JAZZ AND AFRICAN MUSIC NIGHTS

VUSI KHUMALO AND BONGINKOSI MADONSELA

The Jazz and African Music Nights hosted the 24th show of the series featuring the legendary Vusi Khumalo and the young and well-groomed jazz pianist Bonginkosi Mandonsela.

The show started with the performance by Bonginkosi Mandonsela who with a four (4) piece band mesmerized the audience with scintillating performances on grand piano and keyboards, saxophone, Electric bass and Drums.

The quartet played like seasoned professionals based on all the band’s experience of playing at highly acclaimed indoor and outdoor events as well as the acquired experiences as learners at different music institutions.

Bonginkosi accompanied by the band played original compositions which gained favor and acclaim from the audience that gave them a standing ovation at the end of the 45 minutes set. Bonginkosi was also a student prodigy of the late popular and acclaimed Double Bassist Ernest Mothle who taught and mentored Bonginkosi including playing with him at his (Ernest Mothle’s gigs) numerous shows.

Ernest Mothle played with the who’s who of the jazz industry locally and international while in exile including luminaries like Winston Mankunku Ndlozi, Brotherhood of Breath formed by Chris McGregor, Achier Shepp’s, Courtney Paine amongst the others.

It is without doubt that Bonginkosi can hold his own on any stage. His modesty was enough for him to play as a supporting act to Vusi Khumalo who as a main act also played to an appreciative audience who at the end of the show gave a stamp of approval to the performances of both acts and relished the music dished to them in an unbelievable atmosphere of pride, satisfaction, acknowledgment and approval which left them craving for a repeat performance in the future.

The future looks great for this young man!!
