Chris Benavidez

In college, Chris Benavidez worked extensively with the world renowned Bassist, Joel DiBartolo (Bassist for The Tonight Show Band and Buddy Rich Big Band). During this same time, Chris was playing with the straight ahead jazz group Giant Steps Jazz. As a member of Giant Steps, Chris worked the bars and night clubs of Northern Arizona for about a decade (2002 to 2012). During the late 2000s/Early 2010s, Chris launched his first group as a leader, Pithecanthropus Erectus. The band was a tribute to Composer/Bassist Charles Mingus. The bombastic group included 4 or 5 horns and a rhythm section. All of the music was written and arranged by Charles Mingus

Chris was a member of the straight ahead jazz band Giant Steps Jazz in Flagstaff, Arizona (2003 to 2012). Around that same time, Chris was running a Charles Mingus Tribute Band, the name of the group was Pithecanthropus Erectus. Chris is currently working with the band Sans Pagaie in Phoenix, Arizona.
